O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
These
ayahs show the importance of why hypocrisy is forbidden. You can't tell
someone to do something until you've done it yourself.
So like...
"N, why don't you do your dhikr? Seriously!" said S after Asr prayer.
"Okay, I'll do it," said N agitatedly. S grinned to herself because she herself didn't do dhikr. H stared at S. "You don't even do it yourself, S!" "Eeeiiiish. Don't preach what you don't practice lah S," said Ummi.
[This is not based on a true story.]
When N got to the masjid she slammed everyone and sat down. Then, fortunately for N, Mar came. "Hi N!" she said and was going to sit down when....
"Go pray your Tahiyatul Masjid, Mar," N said.
"Oops," said Mar. Then she went to go do her Tahiyatul Masjid.
N did not know that what she had done was wrong.
